SHARE.MedWATER – Sustainable water management in the Mediterranean area

SHARE.MedWATER at a glance

SHARE.MedWATER is a project co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED 2021–2027 programme, aiming to address the growing water scarcity in rural and island areas of the Mediterranean. By focusing on the use of alternative and non-conventional water sources—such as rainwater, greywater and wastewater—the project promotes their treatment, reuse and sustainable management, offering innovative solutions and participatory governance models. With a budget of approximately €3,997,735 and a duration of 45 months (September 2025 – May 2029), SHARE.MedWATER involves 10 partners and 11 associated partners across 7 Mediterranean countries.

The context: why SHARE.MedWATER matters

The Mediterranean is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change: droughts, irregular rainfall and water stress threaten freshwater availability. The Interreg Euro-MED programme aims to strengthen the sustainable economy, protect the environment and promote resilient practices across participating regions. SHARE.MedWATER fits within this vision as a key project to ensure efficient water reuse, reduce the overexploitation of aquifers and water bodies, and enhance community water security.

Project objectives

  • Reduce dependence on overexploited freshwater resources by promoting the sustainable reuse of “non-conventional” water sources.
  • Develop and test technologies and practices for the collection, treatment and reuse of rainwater, greywater and wastewater at both community and district levels.
  • Introduce a decision-support tool (DSS) to help stakeholders, local authorities and communities assess and optimise the integration of alternative water resources from economic, environmental and social perspectives.
  • Foster cooperation and knowledge exchange among Mediterranean regions, adapting solutions to different territorial needs.

Project activities

  • Launch of 7 pilot projects in selected areas to test concrete water reuse solutions at community or district scale.
  • Promotion of participatory governance models, involving local communities, authorities and public and private stakeholders to ensure an inclusive and shared approach.
  • Sharing of best practices, guidelines and policy tools to enhance replicability at the European level, contributing to a greener and more resilient Mediterranean.

The role of Clust-ER Greentech

The Clust-ER Greentech Energy and Sustainable Development will actively contribute to the implementation of pilot actions, the dissemination of solutions across the territory, and engagement with local stakeholders—including companies, public authorities and communities—to promote the adoption of water reuse practices, awareness and participatory governance.

Greentech also played a key role in the project’s design phase: SHARE.MedWATER is the result of a collaborative process developed since 2024 together with the members of the Water Resource Working Group and the CWP – Catalan Water Partnership, a project partner. Among the Italian partners are also ENEA and ART-ER.
